ABOUT THE HAURAKI DISTRICT
The Hauraki District is situated at the base of the Coromandel Peninsula and covers the Hauraki Plains, Paeroa, Waihi and Whiritoa area. There is a very diverse range of geographics and communities. Ngatea, is the hub of the Hauraki Plains, which is predominantly one of the best dairy farming areas in the country. Originally a thriving port, Paeroa is now world famous for the “ Big L & P Bottle" – a reminder of the therapeutic spring waters of Paeroa. Waihi is the town with the heart of gold. It was a thriving goldmining community at the turn of the 19th century and today there is still the large working open-cast mine in Waihi. Whiritoa is a popular summer holiday destination with a great east-coast surf beach.
1. You can visit the beautiful Karangahake Gorge with the Ohinemuri and Waitawheta Rivers flowing through it and walk the many walkways and tunnels, discovering the old gold mining sites among native bush.
2. Waihi is the town with a heart of gold and many fantastic sporting facilities, including an events centre. Lovely Waihi Beach and Whiritoa Beach are just a stone’s throw away.
3. The three golf courses in the district are all well maintained and very popular with locals and visitors. A great way to spend the weekend. Courses are situated in Waihi, Paeroa and Mangatarata.
4. The Hugh Hayward Domain in Ngatea has one of the finest hockey complexes in the country. The full sized sand turf is the focal point of the domain, which also features facilities for many other sports plus a swimming pool and hall. Across the road is the world class Ngatea Water Gardens. Walk through the gardens with its many unique water features.
5. The Miranda Oasis Springs feature the largest natural hot water pool in the southern hemisphere. There are private and public saunas, kids pool and fantastic barbeque areas for the complete family day out. The pool complex also has a caravan park and new tourist cabins.
6. You can come and try out the new indoor skating and leisure centre in Paeroa. Skate hireage is available. When finished here – try your hand at waterskiing, kayaking or boating on the Waihou River down at Cooks Cut.
