The strategy covered the following points:

v Waste minimisation strategy

v The big picture

v Waste management in the Waikato region

v How this strategy was prepared

v Targets

v The programmes – Information gathering programmes, Creating incentive for waste minimisation, Issue – fostering awareness

v Where to from here?

A question and answer session followed.

There was concern regarding the disposal of used tyres and silage wrap.

Mr Brodnax commented that there was a programme being investigated currently for the disposal of tyres. Progress was also being made regarding silage wrap disposal.

The Utilities Manager commented that individual local authorities tended to lack the resources to develop, implement and evaluate waste reduction programmes. Any help with this would be welcomed.

Comment was made that waste disposal was a real problem. We now lived in a disposal society where things were made to be thrown away.

Mr Brodnax commented that hopefully something could be done to turn this around.

His Worship commented that an attitudinal change was the key.

His Worship left the meeting at 10.50 am.

Mr Brodnax advised that a television campaign was being undertaken.

Another issue of concern was the plastic packaging used by manufacturers on consumer goods.

Turua Sewerage AEE (42.003.017)
