Smythes Quarry Composting
The Utilities Manager advised that the owners of Smythes Quarry were currently working through gaining approvals to develop a 500t/month composting operation on site. An assessment of the proposal raised concerns over leachate treatment and disposal resulting in possible increased nitrification of the Waitakaruru Stream. The applicants were currently considering this issue and how the effects could be minimised or mitigated.
It was asked whether the site would be available to the public for disposing of greenwaste.
The Utilities Manager did not think that this would be an option.
Ngatea Green Waste Disposal
At the May Works Committee meeting it was requested further investigation be undertaken into Council operating a limited access green waste facility at Ngatea.
Inquiries made revealed that there were two existing private contractors operating green waste collection in Ngatea.
Recycling
The Utilities Manager sought comment on a number of issues to assist in the production of a detailed report to be presented to the Works Committee.
It was suggested that large business should provide recycling options for plastic bottles. Comment was made that perhaps a move back to glass milk bottle and paper shopping bags would be beneficial. There was concern at the large amount of packaging of consumer goods. The majority of rubbish was paper and plastic.
A general discussion was held regarding various options for recycling facilities.
The Utilities Manager commented that this matter would be reported on further and suggested that perhaps a workshop be held.
GENERAL BUSINESS
There was no general business.
