The monthly report from the Drainage Manager is attached for the Committee’s consideration.

RECOMMENDATION

Drainage and floodgate action at Orongo

This item has been discussed at previous meetings. There is a belief that although the area is in the reach of the river that has twice daily tidal action, the performance of the floodgate outlets is not as efficient as in other areas due to the low ground levels. The committee has requested that Environment Waikato be asked to undertake an assessment of the gravity drainage availability compared to other areas on the Waihou River. The recommendation is that a formal request through Council be forwarded to EW.

A preliminary study was undertaken approximately five years ago, and there have been some discussions with EW staff on the issue.

RECOMMENDATION

THAT Council requests Environment Waikato to undertake a study of the performance of the lower Waihou River floodgated outlets in the Orongo area to ascertain their performance with respect to the intertidal gravity discharge opportunity compared to other areas on the river, and particularly in light of projected sea level rise due to global warming. The study to take account of low ground levels within the catchment relative to tidal river levels.

Kerepehi Town Piping

A request has been received from the owner of the property at the north end of Fernleigh Street, to pipe the open drain between the property and the Kerepehi school off the end of Stanley Street. The estimate for the works is $9,600. The owner is prepared to pay a one quarter share of the cost of the works. A plan of the area is attached.

RECOMMENDATION

THAT 70m of open drain at the northern end of Stanley Street be piped with 300mm diameter RRJ concrete pipe at an estimated cost of $9,600, with a quarter share of the costs to be paid by the adjoining owner.

6. FINANCIAL REPORT
