MATTERS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES

Access Way Adjacent to Wood Appliances

Members’ requested an update regarding the access way adjacent to Wood Appliances. It was reported that staff are preparing a report on this matter. The Community Services Manager will update the members at the next Ward meeting.

COMMUNITY SERVICES

COMMUNITY FACILITIES MANAGERS MONTHLY REPORT (01.002.021)

The Community Services Manager presented the Community Facilities Managers monthly report on the activities for the Committee’s consideration.

THAT the Community Facilities Managers report be received.

Paeroa Swimming Pool

The pool has been well patronised and the pool toy has been well received by the children attending. The lifeguards have been assisting well with the safety of the pool toy. The pool office was broken into very early in the season and a sum of money stolen. As a result of this, changes were made to improve security and police are presently investigating.

Pukerimu (Paeroa) Cemetery – Evaluation Report

The Community Services Manager presented the report on the Pukerimu (Paeroa) Cemetery.

RESOLVED

THAT the report be received

AND THAT the extensions for the Public and RSA sections proceed as recommended in the expansion report but that the proposed works be staged over as long a period as is reasonably practical with the first stage commencing in 2004/05.

The financial report for the 6 months ended 31 December 2003 were tabled at the meeting.

ENGINEERING SERVICES

ROADING: MONTHLY REPORT (01.001.029)

The Roading Manager’s monthly report to the Works Committee was attached.

RESOLVED

THAT the report be received.

PWC04/07 Trembath/Dunn CARRIED

It was commented that a tree on the corner of Norwood and McDonald Streets was causing a nuisance and needed trimming. The Roading Manager will look into this matter. The question was raised as to where the responsibility lay for the maintenance of trees along roadsides. The Roading Manager informed the meeting that if a tree is on the legal road area, it is a Roading responsibility.

Rahu Road Realignment 2004

Construction of the relocation/realignment of Rahu Road will commence in March 2004.

2003 Road Trauma for Hauraki District

It was noted the high incidence of accidents on state highways in comparison with the lower incidence of accidents on local authority roads.

Request for thresh-hold treatments on all the state highway approaches to Paeroa should be made to Transit NZ. The Roading Manager informed the meeting that applications have been made to Transit NZ in the current and previous years for this type of facility.

UTILITIES: MONTHLY REPORT (01.001.028)

The Utilities Manager’s monthly report to the Works Committee was attached.

The Utilities Manager reported the water pump at the Karangahake Reserve was affected due to a power outage on Sunday, 1 February 2004. Water supplies were getting low due to the dry weather but with the recent rainfall this problem has been alleviated.

The Drainage Manager’s monthly report to the Works Committee is attached.

Request to Establish a Community Newspaper

Attached was a letter and report outlining a plan for establishing a community newspaper for Paeroa from Barry Williams of the Paeroa Rotary Club.

THAT this issue lay on the table.

LATE ITEMS OF BUSINESS

Freshlook Meeting

The Freshlook Committee met on Tuesday, 27 January 2004. Some Committee members went on a walk to identify areas of the town which needed upgrading.

The Ward Committee considered suggestions from the Committee which included:

Design and construction of new footpaths

Cobblestones generally should be retained if they are safe and where cobblestones are unsafe to use asphalt to repair

Cobblestones outside Fathers Hotel to be retained

Clean up cobblestones in front of Mackay Street

Design and construction of footpath upgrade to be considered

Street furniture – mesh

Durable street banners to be investigated

Shade over area in front of Post Office

Rubbish bins – replace any redundant bins with lemon style bins

RESOLVED

THAT staff be requested to design and cost the footpath upgrade as discussed with the options of retaining or removing the length of cobblestones between Hall and Mackay Streets on the eastern side of Belmont Road.
