6.2 BRONZE STATUE MOULDS

With the completion of the casting for the new statue for Waihi's Streetscape, the matter of the future of the plaster mouldings needs to be considered. Presently, the moulds, all in pieces of varying shape and dimension, for the three bronze statues are in tact.

Keeping the moulds requires that they be stored for an indefinite period in a safe and dry environment. The plaster moulds over time will become drier and more brittle and will be subject to the occasional relocation.

Retention of the mouldings has to be weighed against the likelihood of damage to the statues, be it damage to the whole or part.  And, whether or not the damaged section can be re moulded from clay. Replication of the original can be made with the assistance of a series of dimensioned photographs or images. The statues are insured for replacement at the value it cost to create them.

If the moulds are to be retained then they will need be stored in suitable containers i.e. boxes with appropriate packaging.

The decision to retain or destroy the moulds needs to be made relatively soon as the latest set of moulds have to be transported back to Paeroa  from Marton, some are here now but approximately two thirds await a decision.

The question of keeping the moulds or photographs through the course of time will in terms of reality be the same - the boxes will simply be boxes of something that future custodians have no close relationship to, the boxes will be space takers, they will be pushed to the back of the store. Nevertheless, neither will the photographs have a close relationship to those who look after them in the future. The photographs will be kept on file along with all other Council plans and documentation although they will be images that the custodian can see when perusing the files.

RECOMMENDATION

That the retention of the bronze statue mouldings be considered.
