COMMUNITY SERVICES MONTHLY REPORT (01.002.021) (139KB)

The Community Services monthly report on activities was presented for the Committee’s consideration.

THAT the Community Services monthly report be received.

Memorial Hall

The Community Liaison Officer advised of the damage caused to the rear corner of the building from large vehicles passing through the narrow accessway to the rear of the hall. Photographs showing recent damage caused to the building were attached. A number of options to improve the accessway were offered by Councils’ Roading Manager and were outlined in the report.

It was agreed that the driveway requires some reconstruction to allow more room for heavy vehicles to pass without restriction. The members requested staff investigate options and costs to redevelop the accessway and report back to the Ward.

RESOLVED

THAT staff review costs for redeveloping the accessway to the rear of the Memorial Hall.

REQUEST FOR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE [20.030.002]

CREATIVE WAIHI

A request from the Steering Group coordinator for assistance with hall hire costs has been received.

The group is organising an event "ARTrageous" to be held in the Memorial Hall on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th April 2007. This event will showcase painting, sculpting, mosaics and massage as well as have local musicians perform on stage.

Public entry will be by ‘gold coin’ donation. The cost of hiring the complex from Thursday through to Saturday evening is $235.00.

RESOLVED

THAT that Ward grant $235.00 to Creative Waihi for hall hire for the event.

Upgrade of Kitchen - Memorial Hall

The Community Liaison Officer advised of the proposed upgrade of the hall kitchen which involves the installation of stainless steel benches, dishwasher and additional elements. A copy of the concept plan drawn by Councils’ Project Manager was presented for the member’s consideration.

THAT the Ward approves the concept plan for the Memorial Hall kitchen upgrade as presented.

Gilmour Reserve Development

It was advised that the proposed date for the opening of the Gilmour Reserve development is Sunday, 29 April 2007. The ceremony will be low key and will include a blessing by Kaumatua from the Waihi Marae at 6.00am. This date is yet to be confirmed.

Victoria Park Playground – Rocket Slide Replacement

The final concept plans for the rocket slide were presented to the members. The Committee gave their approval of the plan.

THAT the concept plan for the replacement rocket slide in Victoria park be approved.

Vandalism – Damage to Power Box Soccer Club Lights

Due to damage received from vandals to the power box for the Soccer Club lights, the club wish to forgo their player shelter and have the power box shifted from the toilets to the Soccer building. It was suggested that the power box be moved to a less prominent place where it is less likely to be damaged by vandals and that the cabinet of the box be made of a heavy metal.

The members supported the proposal in principle subject to funding for the relocation of the power box. Staff was requested to seek a price for the purchase of a heavy steel cabinet to cover the box and costs to relocate it.

Morgan Park – Skatebowl

The Parks and Reserves Manager advised that he was addressing the issue of poor drainage in the bowl at the skate park caused by recent heavy rain.

Morgan Park

The Soccer Club have requested the use of Morgan Park for their training and annual tournaments for the 2007 soccer season. A letter of request was attached.

RESOLVED

THAT the Ward approves the request from the Waihi Association Football Club to use Morgan Park to hold training and annual tournaments for the 2007 soccer season.

Relocated Bus Stop : Seddon Street

The Community Services Manager advised of the letters received from Grey Power and the Waihi Information Centre asking if Council would install additional toilet facilities at the Information Centre as bus transport patrons regularly want to use the single toilet facility within the centre.

It was suggested that the matter be put on hold until a more suitable position for the toilet facilities is agreed, and in the interim, the toilet at the Information Centre remain available for patrons. It was suggested that discussions be held with Eddie Morrow to consider a more suitable location for the toilet facilities and that the matter be reviewed next month.

 

GENERAL BUSINESS

REVIEW OF OPERATION OF THE WAIHI ARTS CENTRE AND MUSEUM (01.000.020)

A report from the Chief Executive regarding the review of the Waihi Arts Centre and Museum was presented.

RESOLVED

THAT the report be received.

The members were requested to consider the fee proposal received from Mr Ken Gorbey, Museum Consultant for costs related to the assessment of the Museum. A copy of the proposal from Mr Gorbey was attached.

The members fully supported that an assessment be carried out, and in the interim, that emergency funding to assist in the operation of the Museum be sourced from the Ward Uniform Annual Charge (UAC) as deficit funding.

RESOLVED

THAT the fee proposal of Ken Gorbey for a review of the Waihi Museum be accepted.
