REQUESTS FOR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

The Waihi Ward Committee has an allocation of $7,400 for discretionary grants during this 2008/09 financial year. Grants have been made to Waihi Ministers Association ($100), Sport ‘N’ Action Waihi ($128), Adventures Southern Coromandel ($100), Rotary Club Waihi ($150), Waihi Community Resource Centre ($117.30), Waihi Community Radio ($1500), Waihi Ministers Assn ($55), Waihi Community Resource Centre ($70 + $500), Bev Ireland ($250), John Mulvay ($340), Rotary Club ($150), Waihi Event Centre Extension Plans ($840), and Waihi Arts Centre And Museum ($2150) leaving a balance of $949.70.

There is one application for financial assistance this month.

SPORT ‘n’ ACTION WAIHI – DUATHLON [487439]

The Development Officer writes advising that they plan to hold a duathlon in Waihi on Saturday 19 July 2009. They intend to make this an annual event. The day will be promoted as a major sport and social event for the community, encouraging as many locals as possible to participate with invitations to outside sports persons and their supporters. The goal is to raise funds for Sport ‘n’ Action Waihi and the Waihi Rugby Club.

To hold the event a comprehensive traffic management plan had to be submitted to New Zealand Transport Authority via their agent Opus Intl. The cost of the plan and its implementation totals $1650 excl. GST. Other costs for the event include printing and advertising ($100) and spot prizes ($500).

The writer is seeking sponsorship to assist with these costs.

RECOMMENDATION

THAT this request be received for consideration.

Attached for your information are letters of thanks from Bev Ireland [487448] and the Waihi Memorial RSA [487446].

SKATEPARK PROPOSAL

Community Services staff has been conferring with a skate park designer and builder over the past months and have managed to obtain some brief detail of the type of facility that he has constructed for other communities and also a broad cost estimate for likely designs.

The proposals are subject to being adopted in the 2009/19 LTCCP later in June 2009.

Attached are three items of correspondence from Jason Parkes, who outlines his involvement with skateparks, and as said, broad cost estimate on a per square meter basis.

RECOMMENDATION

THAT Council engages Jason Parkes in early 2009/10 to design the skateboard park proposal for the Paeroa project in the first instance and then following examination of that design and associated cost estimate, the Plains and Waihi Wards can determine how they might proceed from that point.
