Walking and Cycling Strategy

What is the Walking & Cycling Strategy all about?
 
Walking and cycling means different things to different people. For some, cycling and walking is their only transport or a means of commuting, whilst for others it is a mainly recreational or sporting activity.

The purpose of the Hauraki District Walking and Cycling Strategy is to establish walking and cycling as viable moPair of walking shoesdes of transport in Hauraki District in order to:
  • Reduce the number of short car trips;
  • Reduce the adverse environmental effects from land transport;
  • Encourage development of a roading network that is safe and friendly for walking and cycling; and
  • Enhance public health, fitness and tourism.
Man cycling In summary the Strategy that is now available, recommends:
  • Development of proposed cycle routes and primary pedestrian routes identified for Paeroa, Waihi, Ngatea and Turua. The development of the primary pedestrian routes shall be based on a detailed audit of these routes;
  • Provision for future connections to the proposed Hauraki Rail Trail in Paeroa and the proposed Ohinemuri River Walk in Waihi;
  • Based on a detailed audit of existing facilities the upgrading to a consistent standard of pedestrian facilities within the 500m CBD cordons in Paeroa and Waihi identified in the Scoping Report; and
  • The removal of any barriers or obstacles to wheelchair or mobility scooter use on routes that these users commonly use, or would like to use.
