Fire Plan - Thames Valley Rural Fire District

The Fire Plan is a requirement under the Forest & Rural Fires Act.

Hauraki District Council is a member of the Thames Valley Rural Fire District along with Matamata Piako District Council & Thames Coromandel District Council.

The Plan sets out how the Fire District will discharge the obligations demanded by the  Forest & Rural Fires Act in the rural sectors of each District. The management and policy setting is carried out for the Fire District by the Thames Valley Combined Emergency Management Planning Unit in Thames.

Fire suppression is the responsibility of the respective District Council in whose district the fire is located and associated costs are met by that particular District and recovered from the owner of the land where the fire is situated.  The Rural Fire responsibility is additional to the responsibility that the NZ Fire Service exercise in the urban environment and for fires in structures.

The National Rural Fire Authority provide subsidy to District Councils to acquire fire fighting equipment and training.
The Hauraki District Council has a team of well trained staff to attend to fires and depending on the nature of the fire often call on the assistance of specialist helicopters to extinguish or control fires.
