Building Consent Authority Accreditation
After months of preparation work, Hauraki District Council is officially a
Building Consent Authority (BCA).
The Council was advised of its success early this week and follows a full
compliance audit by the Department of Building and Housing.
The Building Consent Authority Accreditation and Registration Scheme is among
the Building Act 2004 reforms aimed at ensuring buildings are built right first
time and ensures that owners get a quality result for their many building
projects.
It focuses on strengthening the building process at the consent processing,
inspection and approval stages – ie, making sure that territorial and regional
authorities have the appropriate systems, processes, procedures, resources and
capability to do the job.
All territorial or regional authorities must be accredited and registered as a
building consent authority by 30 June 2008 or have transferred their building
control functions to an accredited and registered BCA.
Being a BCA brings with it the responsibility of maintaining standards as we
continue to monitor, review and improve our performance. As a BCA, Hauraki
District Council can deliver assurances regarding the robustness of the building
consent processing and construction to owners and ratepayers
The success of HDC becoming an accredited BCA is a significant milestone for
Council and a terrific achievement for the staff involved. Hauraki District
Council Mayor John Tregidga said he was very proud of the effort of the Council
team responsible for the project and was pleased to meet the deadlines for
gaining accreditation. This was achieved by the team while continuing ‘business
as usual,’ “It’s been a tremendous effort by all involved and ensures that
Hauraki District Council is up there with any other local authority in the
country”.
