The Hauraki District is home to excellent attractions including walkways, tracks and the Hauraki Rail Trail, encompassing an array of outstanding natural features and landscapes.
Walking tracks are a major attraction in the Hauraki District. From short walks to overnight hikes, we've got it all. With areas of the District being steeped in mining history from the 1800s there is no shortage of relics to explore along the way.

Cycle Trail - Hauraki Rail Trail
The Hauraki Rail Trail has been an instance success with cyclists on the track all year round. As entrance to the trail can be made at almost any stretch, cyclists are able to make their journey as short or as long as they wish.
The trail ventures in three directions from Paeroa with four destinations:
- Paeroa to Thames
- Paeroa via Kopu to Pūkorokoro-Miranda
- Paeroa to Te Aroha
- Paeroa to Waihi through the historic and scenic Karangahake Gorge - remember to bring lights for the tunnel
- giving the opportunity for multi-day rides.
You can also ride the section between Waikino and Waihi aboard the Waihi Vintage Railway. There are a number of interesting destinations and cafes along the trails. Plenty of examples in the video below.

Dog Control Areas
There are certain areas within the Hauraki District where dogs are restricted (on-leash only) or prohibited as part of the Hauraki District Council Consolidated Bylaw. These areas include beaches, children’s playgrounds, sections of the Hauraki Rail Trail, Department of Conservation land and some urban areas (for example shopping areas, sports fields, picnic areas, etc). If you have a dog with you it is your responsibility to look for dog control signage.
For a full description including maps of prohibited areas please view the Dog Control Areas (503KB) or the full Control of Dogs Bylaw.
Clean Up After Your Dog
Let’s keep our public places clean for everyone to enjoy. Failure to remove your dog’s droppings from public areas is an offence against the Council’s Control of Dogs Bylaw and carries a fine.
