Waihi Community Swimming Pool Proposal - Consultation Open

What is this proposal about?

Council has been managing and operating the Waihi Community Pool for the 2010/11 season. The Waihi Ward is now looking to consult with the community on options for this operation and the continued use of the pool in the future.

The pool is on land owned by the Ministry of Education and has since 1965 been managed and operated by a Waihi Community Swimming Pool Committee, a joint committee made up of representatives from the community and the Waihi College.

In previous years, the Waihi Ward Committee has made a contribution of $20,000 per year to the running of the Waihi Pool. This was at a cost to the ratepayer of $6.20 (incl. GST) per property per year. In early 2010, Waihi College indicated that it was no longer in a position to continue to provide resources for the operation of the pool to the public. This was due to the fact that the majority of the work and expense had in the later years fallen on them.

The costs of managing and operating the pool are funded from the Community Facilities targeted rate for Waihi. All property owners in the Waihi Ward pay the Community Facilities targeted rate, which enables residents an equal opportunity to use the facilities that Waihi has to offer. Council considers that the construction of a new heated pool complex is not a feasible option due to the high costs (many millions of dollars) associated with this.

The options being proposed by Council in the Statement of Proposal for the 2011/12 year are:

  • Option One: Renew the lease for management and operation of the pool for 12 months
  • Option Two: Renew the lease for management and operation of the pool for 14 years
  • Option Three: Do nothing (in this case, there will be no Community Pool available to the public)
