Waitakaruru Waste Water Consents Renewal
The resource consent will expire on 10th November 2023. An application for a renewed resource consent was lodged with WRC at least six months before the expiry date, i.e. before 10th May 2023, to enable the WWTP to lawfully continue operating until a decision is made on the renewal consent application.
Project
Harrison Grierson Consultants have been appointed to provide specialist wastewater engineering advice as well as prepare and lodge the resource consent application. An assessment of the environmental effects which the discharge has on the Waitakaruru River will be undertaken, so that mitigating measures can be put in place. These mitigating measures will form part of the resource application.
An assessment of cultural impacts will be also be carried out, in partnership with iwi, to ensure new and improved outcomes that better serve Papatūānuku and Te Taiao. This will include Iwi outcomes of te mana a wai and Te Taiao. These measure will be included in the in the resource application.
In advance of the renewal resource consent application, HDC has commissioned a specialist wastewater treatment company to review the performance of the WWTP and recommend upgrades to the maintenance and/or infrastructure of the plant. The on-site works are now complete.
The expected benefits of following the above process are as follows:
- The discharge complies to the most recent environmental requirements
- It is likely that this action will contribute to the ecological and environmental improvement of the Waitakaruru River
