New mining proposal

New Waihi mining proposal shared with Council

02/02/2021 5:00pm

You may have noticed parts of the new footpath in Ngatea town still look unfinished. That's because some of the work that was done at the end of last year didn't quite make the grade and it needs to be redone. Over the last week or so our crews have been ripping out these areas of footpath and pouring new concrete. The last of this replacement concrete will be poured this week, leaving just the finishing touches to complete.

From top to bottom

Once all of the footpath is up to scratch, our crews will run a fine tooth comb from one end of town to the other, fixing any issues, such as chipped kerb, as they go. We expect it will take until the end of February for all the repair work and finishing touches to be done.

Textured pavers and anti-slip surfaces

Other work that's had to wait until the footpath is complete includes installing specialised textured pavers to guide those with vision impairment and provide an anti-slip surface for all pedestrians. We'll start installing these pavers once the last of the replacement footpath is laid this week.

Don't despair if the gardens look bare

We've created areas for planting, but we'll have to wait until the Autumn rain to add the seedlings because they won't do well in this hot dry weather. In the meantime, we'll add mulch to the gardens to prevent any dust and create a nice compost bed for the new plants when they do arrive.

Weekly updates

Now the project is largely complete we'll provide updates as needed rather than on a regular weekly basis.

Waka Kotahi - NZ Transport Agency

At this stage we haven't had an update from NZ Transport Agency about the last stage of work to complete the upgrade to State Highway 2, which involves laying new asphalt in the westbound lane of SH2 between Paul Drive and Pipiroa Road. The completion of this project was initially scheduled for last year but was delayed due to the Covid-19 lockdown. Before the Christmas break, NZ Transport Agency advised they would be back some time after Waitangi weekend - we'll let you know as soon as specific dates are confirmed.
