APPOINTMENT OF DEPUTY CHAIRPERSON

Paeroa Bluelight

A letter has been received from the secretary of Paeroa Bluelight requesting financial assistance to purchase merchandise that will help with their first event.

The skating event is to be held on Saturday 7 December 2013 at the Railway Reserve.

THAT the request be declined and a letter of explanation be sent to the Paeroa Bluelight group advising the reason why the request was declined.

Positive Paeroa Inc.

The town promoter has written seeking financial assistance for the 11th annual Echo Walking Festival that is taking place 15-30 March 2014.

This year the festival is focused family friendly walks including the rail trail link to Maritime Park and Museum and a night time walk of the Karangahake loop.

The writer requests a grant of $500.00 to cover their costs.

RESOLVED

THAT $250.00 is granted to Positive Paeroa from the Paeroa Ward Discretionary Fund to assist with the running costs of the event, and

THAT it be suggested to Positive Paeroa that they apply for annual funding through the Long Term Plan process.

Paeroa Playcentre

The secretary for the playcentre has written advising that they have received a quote from a local sign writer as per the Ward’s decision of 8 October 2013. The cost for a local sign writer to supply the same signs is approximately $200 (64%) more.

The writer asks the Ward committee to reconsider their request for financial assistance.

RESOLVED

THAT $300.00 is granted to the Paeroa Playcentre from the Paeroa Ward Discretionary Fund in support of the purchase of two promotional signs.

St. Joseph’s School

The Principal for the school has written advising that they are fundraising for the school and seek any assistance Council is able to offer. The school is having a fundraising dinner on 22 November where there will be two guest speakers and a three course dinner valued at $30.00.

Paeroa Little Theatre

A committee member has written advising that they plan to hold workshops for younger people to encourage them to use their skills and talents to develop character that will improve their prospects of success in their lives. The theatre group has trialed a pilot scheme that was successful and students are actively seeking ways to apply what they have learnt.

The theatre group is currently creating stage settings and requires financial assistance to purchase 73 metres of curtain material for their productions. The material is estimated to cost $1655.00.

RESOLVED

THAT $500.00 is granted to the Paeroa Little Theatre from the Paeroa Ward Discretionary Fund in support of purchasing materials for their productions.

Cr Thorp and Cr Adams declared a conflict of interest in the item concerning the Paeroa and Lawn Tennis & Squash Club and took no part in the discussion.


Paeroa Lawn Tennis & Squash Club Inc.

The funding coordinator for the club has written requesting financial assistance for their astro-turf (tennis court) project. The club has been fundraising and finds itself with a shortfall of $17,800 for stage 1 of the project. This shortfall has arisen from lesser funds being received from another philanthropic trust and an increase in project costs.

The writer requests Council consider a grant of $7,000 towards the additional costs in surfacing and infrastructure.

RESOLVED

THAT $5,000.00 is granted to the Paeroa Lawn Tennis & Squash Club Inc. from the Paeroa Community Facilities and Recreational Development Fund in support of the club’s astro turf project.

Cr Adams abstained from voting on the motion.


Paeroa Community Support Trust

The youth/programmes coordinator has written advising Councillors that the Trust (PCST) is trying to get a community brochure resource booklet underway. PCST has also offered to be the ‘gatekeepers’ of the data updating it bi-annually.

The writer advises the cost of printing a brochure will be 70 cents and estimates 500 brochures will be printed. The brochure will be available to the whole community as well as new comers.

Attached to the writer’s letter was correspondence advising that Positive Paeroa Inc. (PPI) is working to deliver a ‘new comers’ pack and would like to see a single approach to the brochure. Through the 2012-22 LTP 2014/15 term PPI were granted $10,000 towards a brochure.

The writer seeks direction from the Ward for their project.

RESOLVED

THAT the request from the Paeroa Community Support Trust is not supported as the town promoter is already tasked with providing a similar brochure.

Railway Reserve – BBQ

Prices have been obtained for a double BBQ and Lions are looking at installing a FEL double BBQ. The group would like Council to purchase the BBQ as they are not GST registered and they will refund Council the price of the BBQ less the GST. They request that Council supply the power to the BBQ at an estimated cost of $2800, and cover the cost of the consents required. The BBQ does not need consent but because the shelter is over six square metres it will need consent at an approximate cost of $1000.

RESOLVED

THAT the request from Paeroa Lions be received, and

THAT Council pays for the power installation and any consents required to be funded from the Paeroa Community Facilities and Recreational Development Fund.

Railway Reserve – Request for Alternative Activities

A request has been made to have some alternative activities made available near the skatepark. There was a suggestion of a basketball hoop.

THAT the request for alternative activities at Railway Reserve be received, and

THAT consultation takes place before any further activities are put onto Railway Reserve.

Paeroa Promotions Trust Inc. (1144902)

The Paeroa Promotions Trust has written requesting permission for the use of the land situated on the corner of Railway Reserve and William Street for the purpose of holding ‘Super Enduro’ event. The event will be held in conjunction with the Battle of the Streets event on Sunday, 16 February 2014.

RESOLVED

THAT permission is granted to the Paeroa Promotions Trust for the use of the land situated on the corner of Railway Reserve and William Street for the purpose of holding ‘Super Enduro’ event on Sunday, 16 February 2014 subject to the area being reinstated following the event at their cost.

Paeroa Ward expressed their wish to have a Ward workshop to discuss their priorities including the BBQ at Railway Reserve.


Mowing – members requested to see the last ten years mowing budgets, to see allocations, increases etc. Paeroa Ward would like to see where the increases and decreases are as a result of the reallocations.


The Community Services Manager to provide review of all bin locations, and costs at the next Ward meeting.

The Chairperson wished everyone a happy Xmas and New Year.
