The Council owns and operates pensioner flats at Paeroa, Waihi and Ngatea.
Applicants must be at least 60 years of age. In the case of a couple applying, both must be at least 60 years of age.
All applicants must complete the prescribed form Application for a Pensioner Flat [PDF, 85 KB] and supply all the information that is required. The applicant(s) signature must be witnessed by a Justice of the Peace.
The applicant(s) must have a genuine housing need.
The length of time that an applicant has resided within the Hauraki District will cause greater consideration to be given to that applicant.
Consideration will also be given to the compatibility of the applicant with existing tenants.
Currently, the Council subsidises pensioner flat rentals by 30% (reducing to 15% over the next few years) of the current market rental, and therefore, applicants are asset tested.
However, applications will be received from those with a higher level of assets and the subsidy will be reduced accordingly.

The asset level will be fixed on commencement of occupancy with a review of the rental available only in the case of proven hardship.
Assets include cash in hand or bank, investments, shares, bonds, debentures, house and land (current Government valuation), life insurance policies (surrender value) and motor vehicle. Furniture is excluded.

- All rents are payable fortnightly in advance by direct credit through a bank account
- Tenants are required to enter into a simple form of tenancy agreement.
- Generally, no pets are allowed.
