Eastern Waikato Waste Management and Minimisation Plan
What is this plan?
The purpose of a Waste Management and Minimisation Plan is to outline a Local Authority’s strategy to manage waste more efficiently and reduce the amount of waste being put in landfills by enhancing the recycling and re-use of materials.
Local Authorities are required to develop and adopt a Waste Management and Minimisation Plan (WMMP) under section 43 of the Waste Minimisation Act, 2008.
Why a joint plan?
Hauraki District Council, Matamata-Piako District Council and Thames-Coromandel District Council have worked together to develop a joint WMMP. The benefits to the three Councils working together to develop this plan include establishing more consistent standards and levels of service across the Districts and the sharing of costs and resources.
Currently the East Waikato Councils all share the same service provider for our refuse and recycling collections and offer similar services to residents and visitors to the districts.
We believe our planned approach to joint working will lead to higher quality and more efficient services for waste and recycling, including increased waste minimisation.
