New mining proposals

OceanaGold presents proposal to extend mining life in Waihi to 2037 and beyond

01/07/2021 8:00am

After talking with you during our Dog Control Policy and Bylaw review process earlier this year, we heard that we needed more off leash dog exercise areas around the district for our furry friends, so we’ve added some new sites in Ngatea, Turua, Kerepehi and Paeroa.

The new areas include Turua Domain, a fenced off area on River Road, Ngatea, (where our old stock pound used to be); a fenced off area at the Kerepehi Domain, and Leach Field in Paeroa. These new sites were adopted by Council on 28 April 2021.

We heard that the community wasn't so keen on some of the other sites we proposed, such as Bank Street Reserve in Waihi and the north-western corner of Hugh Howard Domain in Ngatea, which has been earmarked for a new pump track, so those sites weren't included.

Who let the dogs out?

Although the changes to the Dog Control Policy and Bylaw come into effect on the 1 July, the new off leash exercise areas will require work before they’ll be ready for use. Once we have new fencing, rubbish bins and signage in place, we can let the dogs out! We plan to have the new sites ready by 1 October 2021.

Summer just got more 'pawsome' in Whiritoa

We also heard that the dates and hours available to dogs off leash on Whiritoa beach over the summer peak period were too restrictive so we’ve lined up the peak season hours to match up with Whangamata's.  This gives consistency along the coastline and extra time on the beach for pooches and their families.

Here're the new beach access hours for dogs this summer

From the 1 July 2021, dogs can be off-leash on the beach, north of Moray Place beach access, including the lagoon, during the following dates and times:

During the year

10 February– 19 December the same year

3pm – 10am the following day

(Excluding public holiday weekends)

Note: Outside of these hours but within these dates, dogs must be on a leash in this area.

Peak season and all public holiday weekends

20 December – 9 February the following year:

6pm – 9am the following day

All public holiday weekends:

6pm – 9am the following day

Note: Outside of these hours but within these dates, this area is prohibited to dogs.

And remember...

Dogs are prohibited at all times on the southern end of Whiritoa beach, south of Moray Place beach access, as this is a significant NZ dotterel breeding site and includes a urupā site.
