Mayor Toby Adams said the OnYa Awards were a highlight for him in his role and it’s not hard to see why. Celebrating and honouring people that make our communities thrive is powerful and humbling stuff.

Michelle Johns (Community Advocacy Officer) MC’ed the evening beautifully. She was astounded at the level of involvement and commitment each recipient has for their community as she read out each profile. It truly is quite overwhelming what our recipients do for the community and their schools. It brings tears to your eyes to see how humble and gracious they all are to receive their award.

Tu Meke - Supreme Award

Tu Meke – the Supreme Awards, for going Above and Beyond for their communities were awarded to Krishna Buckman of Waihi and Gill Leonard, a former HDC Councillor from the Plains. New Plains Councillor Neil Gray was there to congratulate her!

Kelley, the reporter from the Valley Profile commented on how wonderful it was that she knew so many of the people there. It was lovely to see staff, councillors, teachers and a school principal there too (Paeroa College take a bow).

Red carpet moment

All you could hear all night was the sound of cameras clicking as reporters from the local newspapers, proud parents, friends, whanau and teachers from the three schools captured all the happy moments.

Te Au Pounamu Warren of Paeroa College was fresh off the plane from his successful kick boxing competition in Wales! The family had only had two hours with him before arriving for the ceremony – now that’s commitment. His mother’s voice ringing out to acknowledge him as he received his award and Larn Wilkinson and various whanau who led the most rousing hakas for each Paeroa College student as they collected their awards were highlights on the night. Have a watch! It was loud, passionate and spine tingling.
