Mayoral Drought Relief Fund

We're getting in behind our farmers

Need help with transport costs for supplementary feed?

Thanks to relief funding from the Ministry for Primary Industries, we have $250,000 to give out to our drought-stricken farmers.

Grants are for the partial reimbursement of transport costs including cartage of livestock for grazing and/or freight for supplementary feed to mitigate animal welfare issues. The minimum grant is $250 and the maximum grant is $5000 per business.

Certain criteria apply

Who is providing the funding?

Ministry for Primary Industries.

Following a letter from our three local Mayors (Hauraki, Matamata-Piako and Thames Coromandel) and local MP Scott Simpson and Hauraki Māori Trust Board Chairman David Taipiri, the Ministry for Primary Industries has provided relief funding of $500,000 for drought stricken farmers in north Waikato and Northland.

How much funding is available?

Farmers in the Thames Valley area, which includes Hauraki, Thames-Coromandel, Matamata-Piako and eastern parts of the Waikato District, will receive $250,000 of the $500,000.

Hauraki District Council has agreed to add $10,000 towards the local fund. Matamata-Piako and Thames-Coromandel District Councils will also contribute.

What is the purpose of the fund?

The Ministry of Primary Industries has stated that the purpose of the funding is: Partial reimbursement for the transport costs of supplementary feed for livestock to mitigate animal welfare issues where pasture has not yet recovered.

Who can apply for the fund?

Anyone who lives in the rural community and owns livestock (including equine) with a predominantly pasture diet within the named district boundaries.

Additional criteria:

  • The recovery of pasture covers has been very slow due to low autumn rainfall.
  • Livestock owners are expected to have undertaken a feed plan. Where needed, they may utilise budgeting services available through an appropriate farm consultant, DairyNZ and Beef+Lamb.
  • Lifestyle block owners are eligible where the criteria is met.
How do I apply for the fund?
How much money will I receive?

You can apply for a minimum grant of $250 and a maximum grant of $5000.

I own three farms - can I make separate applications for all of them?

No. We’ll only accept one application per business.

Who is assessing the applications?

The council has appointed a Mayoral Advisory Fund committee to distribute the grants. Members are:

  • Mayor Toby Adams – Hauraki District Council
  • Conall Buchanan
  • Julie Pirie
  • Stephen Silcock

Council chose these people for their farming experience and local knowledge.

I paid for the transport of feed at the beginning of June - can I still claim reimbursement?

While there is a three-week window for applications from 22 June to 13 July, the committee will consider reimbursing transport costs of supplementary feed incurred from 15 April 2020.

When do applications close?

For you to be eligible for the fund, we must receive your application by 5pm Monday 13 July 2020.

If my application is accepted, when will I receive my grant?

Grants will be paid out by Friday 31 July 2020.
