A Stock Crossing Permit is valid for five years from date of issue. All conditions of the Permit must be met at all times to remain valid.

We have rules for moving livestock in our district, along and across local roads we control. This is to protect the roads as well as ensure the safety of road users.

Roads we control may include state highways where NZ Transport Agency has delegated control to us. Our bylaw contains rules around:

  • The need for permits for moving stock over roads
  • Stock movement limits where an underpass may be needed

Livestock includes:

  • cattle,
  • deer,
  • llamas,
  • alpacas,
  • sheep,
  • goats, and
  • any other animal farmed and dependent on humans for their care.

Stock Underpass

Limits to stock movement across roads is included in the Stock Crossing Bylaw and in such cases a council approved stock underpass may be required. See the bylaw:

Building a stock underpass will require a resource consent (possibly) and a building consent.

Report wandering or missing stock

  • To report livestock wandering anywhere including local roads, state highways and road reserves
  • Callouts can result in impounding of stock and will incur fees for the owners of the stock.
