Markets and Events
Markets
Event and market organisers need to ensure they provide for the sale of food safely and appropriately at their event.
The organiser is responsible for gathering and vetting all relevant food safety information from participating food sellers.
In addition, our Events Coordinator can provide assistance to ensure you meet regulatory requirements, support event promotion, sustainability and processes.
If you can't find what you need or would just like to speak to us about your event idea, then contact our Events Coordinator:
- by email or
- phone: (07) 862 8609 or 0800 734 834 (from within district)

Fundraising Stalls
Non-profit organisations selling food less than 20 times per year are not required to register and complete paper work. For example a school baking cakes for a cake stall at a gala event does not need to fill out any forms and register as long as they keep below the 20 events per year. Exceeding the 20 events per year is considered to be a commercial operation and they would need to register with Council.
In general, fundraising stalls selling food are limited in what they can sell.
- Sausage sizzle
- Cake stall
- Hangi stall
- Other non-perishable and pre-packaged foods e.g. soft drink cans, pre-packed confectionery, fruit and vegetables that have not been cut or processed.
With the exception of hangi, only fundraising stalls may prepare food from unregistered premises. Hangi must be prepared and packaged from a registered or approved kitchen.
An approved kitchen is one that has been approved by an environmental health officer and is suitable for the intended food preparation purpose, but does not hold a council registration e.g. a marae or a community hall. Private homes cannot be approved premises.
Stalls wanting to sell food other than those mentioned above (regardless of whether it is for fundraising or private profit) will need to contact an Environment Health Officer to discuss their proposal on 07 862 8609 or 0800 734 834 (from within the district).
Please note: if a premises requires an inspection to check that it is suitable, inspection fees may apply.
