Kerepēhi Raw Water Upgrades
Kerepēhi will be busy over the next 12 months with construction of two new raw water storage reservoirs at the water treatment plant and the replacement of the existing main from the Pekapeka intake on Hauraki Road.
Raw Water Storage Reservoirs
The new reservoirs, due for completion mid-year, will add around 4 million litres additional storage. This will significantly reduce the risk of a raw water shortage that can occur in severe weather events and due to the tidal influence of the source water (Waihou river).
The water treatment plant will have around 24 hours reserve of raw water at current processing throughput.
This will enable the network to be continuously supplied, increasing the resilience of the water supply network without loss of service.
The budget for this project is approximately $2.7 million and will be constructed by Reliant Solution Limited who also constructed the two treated water storage reservoirs at the site in 2018.
The tanks will be constructed simultaneously at the back of the treatment plant. The civil works on the new reservoirs are scheduled to start late March but the level of activity on site will slowly increase from the beginning of the month.
Another important part of the project is to extend the new raw water rising main to feed the new storage reservoirs.
Raw Water Main
Work is already underway to replace the current 450mm-diameter pipe from the Pekapeka intake to the Kerepēhi water treatment plant.
These pipes have reached their end of life. The renewals will increase resilience in the network and provide security of the supply.
A total of 5.3 kilometres of a 630mm-diameter raw water intake pipe is being laid which will connect to the two new raw water storage tanks. Budget for the pipeline is $6.05 million.
