Waihī Water Treatment Plant (WTP) is currently undergoing an upgrade to provide for an additional / second membrane filtration unit.
Membranes are very fine filters of different sizes which are used in water treatment process to remove any contaminants. Water is then distributed to the network and ultimately to customers connected to the Waihī water supply.
The current WTP has a single set of membranes, so if there is an unexpected failure it is possible that the plant could shut down and disrupt supply.
This project will provide a backup membrane for water supply resilience in Waihī and the ability to respond seamlessly in the event of a failure.
Construction is underway to extend the existing building to accommodate the new membrane and ancillary equipment.
Activity is expected on site until late 2024 before the new membrane is commissioned and brought into service.
