Showcasing the origins of the ANZAC spirit
Written and performed by iconic New Zealand actor Mark Wright, this one-man play, exploring the origins of the ANZAC spirit, captures everything that makes a theatre experience profound, moving and entertaining - you will not be the same when you leave.
Mark Wright was inspired to write his play after his experience working with Hauraki District Council in 2022 to front our series of short videos titled 'Voices Behind the Uniforms' to commemorate ANZAC Day. He has a historic family connection to the Rob Roy Hotel in Waihī and is a self-confessed 'amateur' historian. Put it all together and The Gallipoli Monologues was born and premiered at the Waihī Theatre in June 2022 to huge acclaim.
What the reviews are saying
Check out the review written by Kelley Tantau for the Valley Profile from his Paeroa performance.
"Mark Wright is a war veteran, a lieutenant colonel, an army doctor, a beloved son. Each symbolised by a different piece of headwear, the characters are more than just stories and words, however poignant, they are people."
"You mourn for them, you grieve with them, but in almost the same breath, you smile at them. With a deft hand, Mark balances the sombre stories with humour."
"Mark Wright's deft touch and clever dialogue makes the Gallipoli Monologues a show not to miss."

The Gallipoli Monologues had its international debut at the Waihī Theatre in June 2022. The intimate theatre space amplified the experience of 'being there'. And there was nothing 'local about Mark Wright's performance. The quality of the writing and acting holds its own on the world stage. To have this tour de force showing locally again, to commemorate ANZAC Day 2024, is something quite special.
Tickets are available from Waihī Stationers, $25 per adult, $10 per student.
