Hauraki Rail Trail
The Hauraki Rail Trail has been an instant success with cyclists on the track all year round. As entrance to the trail can be made at almost any stretch, cyclists are able to make their journey as short or as long as they wish. The trail is a grade one (easiest) and gives the opportunity for multi-day rides a four or five day ride suitable for all ages, fitness levels and abilities.
The trail ventures in three directions from Paeroa with multiple destinations:
- Paeroa to Thames
- Paeroa via Kōpū to Kaiaua
- Paeroa to Te Aroha and Te Aroha to Matamata
- Paeroa to Waihī through the historic and scenic Karangahake Gorge - remember to bring lights for the tunnel

Section A: Kaiaua - Thames Grade one (easiest), 55km, five to six hours
Section B: Thames - Paeroa Grade one (easiest), 34km, three to four hours
Section C: Paeroa - Waihī Grade one to two (easiest to easy), 24km, three hours
Section D: Paeroa - Te Aroha Grade one (easiest), 23km, two to three hours
Section E: Te Aroha - Matamata Grade one (easiest), 37km, two to four hours
You can also ride the section between Waikino and Waihī aboard the Waihī Vintage Railway. There are a number of interesting destinations and cafes along the trails. Plenty of examples in the video below.
