Ngātea greenwaste service closing

Good waste services are part of how we look after the Hauraki District, and that means putting them where they’ll have the most impact. After 18 months, the Hauraki District Council greenwaste collection site at Ngātea hasn’t had the anticipated use. Wednesday 22 April, will be the last day for the community to dispose of greenwaste in Ngātea.

Why this change is happening

After 18 months of operation, we’ve taken a look at how the service is being used.

While it’s been available twice a week (Wednesdays and Saturdays, 12 pm–4 pm), overall use has stayed low.

Putting that staff time and budget into services that reach more of our community is how we keep waste management working well for the district as a whole.

What this means for you

If you currently use the Ngātea site for greenwaste, you still have a few options:

• Paeroa Refuse Transfer Station
• Waihī Refuse Transfer Station
• Private greenwaste providers
• Home composting

Home composting is a practical option for garden waste and one of the most effective ways to keep organic material out of landfill. The recycling services in Ngātea will continue as usual.

Waste services are something we all share and work best when they reach as many people as possible.

Changes like this help make sure we’re putting time and effort into services that are used more widely and make the biggest difference across the district.

While composting is beneficial, the overall environmental impact at Ngātea was minimal due to the low volume collected and transport requirements.
