Great news for basketball fans and our rangatahi! It's game on for a brand new D-shaped basketball court at Paeroa's Railway Reserve.
After listening to feedback from our local kura and the wider community, we're ready to tip off construction on Wednesday 28 October.
The project will take place in two stages. First, we'll build the court pad, with work expected to take 7–10 working days between 7 am and 5 pm. The concrete will then need around four weeks to cure before we complete the final touches.
In the second stage, we'll install the basketball hoop and add the court line markings ahead of the official opening.
The court is expected to be ready for action by mid-December.
The basketball court was identified as an MVP must-have feature during our consultation with local schools, and it's the standout request we heard from our community. Right now, we're focused on delivering this court and doing it well. This exciting project, included in our 2024-2034 Long Term Plan, will also include a new path connecting the basketball court to the playground.
Back in June 2025, we asked our community to help us prioritise what should be included in this upgrade through surveys and community events. Your feedback has been invaluable in shaping this project, and we're thrilled to see it fast breaking into reality.
By summer, we'll have a brand new all-star court ready for pickup games, practice sessions, and community fun. We can't wait to see everyone shooting hoops and making the reserve buzz with activity!
What our community can expect during construction:
During construction, you might notice some activity in the area including trucks, a small digger, and one day of concrete truck works. The construction area will have security fencing and clear signage for safety. You might hear minor construction noise between 7am and 5pm, but the works are positioned away from homes so impact on neighbours should be minimal. The reserve will remain open and in bounds during this time.
