Get Winter Ready

Are you emergency-ready this winter? Winter can often bring severe weather, but no matter what the weather it's a good idea to be prepared.

Keep an eye on the weather

MetService provides land-based severe weather alerts. These are issued through a system of Outlooks, Watches and Warnings. Check to see if there are any weather alerts in place for where you are or where you are going.

Know the risks in your zone

Know the risks where you live, work or travel. Flooding, storms/cyclones and high winds can feature more often in winter. Know your zone and make sure you're ready in case severe weather hits your area.

Prepare your property for severe weather

Winter often brings severe weather so it’s good to plan ahead for things you'll need to do to make your property safe, particularly for high winds or flooding events.

High Winds

Make a list of items to bring inside or tie down when strong winds are forecast. A list will help you remember anything that strong winds can break or pick up.

Tie down your trampoline and other heavy outdoor objects. Remove anything that could become a damaging missile.

If very high winds are forecast, close doors and windows and pull curtains and blinds over windows.

Floods

Take measures to reduce potential flood damage.

Make a list of items inside that you will need to move before a flood. You’ll need to move valuable and dangerous items as high about the floor as possible. Use watertight containers to store important items.

Think about the location of your outdoor items, pets and animals and make a plan.

Put safety first. Don’t take any chances. Act quickly if you see rising water.

Plan for no power

What would you do if the power was out for days? How will you see, cook, keep warm?

Plan your travel

Severe weather can make it unsafe to travel. Floods, landslides and snow can all block and damage roads. Before you leave home, it's always a good idea to check for weather and State Highway conditions.

Supplies and Checklists

At home

If you're at home, you probably have most of the things you need already. You don’t have to have them all in one place, but you might have to find them in a hurry and/or in the dark.

Going away

If you're going away, make sure you have what you need. You might not be able to get home or you might be stranded in your car for some time.

Remember to pack enough medication to see you through.
