Whiteware Degassing

The disposal of whiteware such as refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners, etc, require ‘degassing’, which is the safe removal of the cooling/heating refrigerant contained in the appliance. This is a legal requirement to prevent harmful effects to our environment, atmosphere and health. The degassing must be done by certified technicians. It is illegal to release the gases into the atmosphere and serious penalties apply.

The Degassing Process

Did you know that knowingly Releasing Refrigerants is illegal in New Zealand?

Check the serial number plate on your appliance for any refrigerant identification. Some later units have a yellow triangle with a warning of flammable refrigerant.

  • Stop on the weighbridge
  • Select "Item-Based" on the screen
  • Choose "E-waste" from the options
  • Place your whiteware item in the marked area next to the steel recycling
  • Drive onto the exit weighbridge
  • Pay using the EFTPOS machine to finish your transaction
  • Operator will ensure whiteware items stay on-site until they are safely degassed
  • Operator will contact the contractor to arrange processing of the items
  • Operator will move degassed items to the steel recycling area for processing
  • Contractors will set up on-site to safely degas units
  • Gas will be captured using purpose-built cylinders provided by Real Cold NZ
  • Contractors will remove degassed units from the site for reuse
  • Other materials will be recycled or disposed of through ultra-high-temperature burning to safely destroy hydrocarbons and refrigerants
