Why should appliances be degassed?
Degassing is a legal requirement under the Ozone Layer Protection Act 1996 (OLPA) and the Climate Change Response Act 2002 (CCRA). These laws aim to prevent the release of harmful substances, such as synthetic greenhouse gases (SGGs) and ozone-depleting refrigerants, into the atmosphere.
What are refrigerants?
Refrigerants are chemical compounds used in cooling systems to absorb and release heat, allowing appliances like refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners to maintain cool temperatures. They circulate through the appliance’s system, changing from a liquid to a gas and back, enabling effective heat transfer. In short, refrigerants are gases that allow us to cool and heat.
Types of refrigerants
Ozone-Depleting Substances (ODSs):
Examples: Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs).
These refrigerants were commonly used in older appliances but were phased out under the Ozone Layer Protection Act of 1996 due to their harmful effects on the ozone layer.
Synthetic Greenhouse Gases (SGGs):
Examples: Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).
These are widely used in modern appliances. While they don’t harm the ozone layer, they are potent greenhouse gases, contributing significantly to climate change.
Why are refrigerants regulated?
Refrigerants can be harmful when released into the atmosphere:
- Ozone-depleting refrigerants break down the ozone layer, increasing UV radiation exposure and its harmful effects on health and the environment.
- SGGs trap heat in the atmosphere, exacerbating global warming.
What does the law say?
The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) enforces OLPA and CCRA regulations. These laws include:
- It is illegal to release SGGs or ozone-depleting refrigerants into the atmosphere.
- Certified technicians must degas appliances containing these gases before disposal.
- Serious penalties apply to those who fail to comply with these regulations.

How to know if your appliance needs to be degassed
A simple rule of thumb is:
If the appliance cools down or in some cases heats up, it likely contains refrigerants and needs to be degassed before disposal. If not sure check the serial number plate for any refrigerant identification, some later units have a yellow triangle with a warning of flammable refrigerant.
This includes:
- Cooling appliances: Fridges, freezers, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers.
- Heating appliances: Heat pumps and some water heaters.
Always check the manufacturer’s label or manual for confirmation.
What to look for on a manufacturer’s label
The manufacturer’s label on an appliance can provide clear indications that it contains refrigerants and needs to be degassed. Look for the following:
Refrigerant type or code:
Common codes include R-134a, R-410A, R-22, R-32, or other "R" numbers.
These indicate the type of refrigerant used in the appliance.
Chemical names or symbols:
Look for terms like HFCs (Hydrofluorocarbons), CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons), or HCFCs (Hydrochlorofluorocarbons).
Environmental warning symbols:
Symbols or statements about refrigerants being hazardous to the environment may also be present.
Cooling or heating function indicators:
Labels explicitly mentioning "cooling" or "heating" systems often signify refrigerant use.
Signs your appliance needs degassing

- It is a cooling or heating appliance like a fridge, freezer, air conditioner, or heat pump.
- The appliance has a compressor, which is a strong indication it uses refrigerants.
